Elon Musk's driverless robotaxi is expanding its range of destinations, what is the minimum fare
After launching its driverless robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, USA, on June 22, Tesla, the electric car manufacturer owned by Elon Musk, has now taken the initiative to expand its range of destinations. Although initially launched on a limited scale in a specific area, the robotaxi will also operate in distant destinations in Austin under this new initiative. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that this facility will be launched soon. He said that robotaxi operations may also be launched in San Francisco in the next few months.
According to Tesla, people who are currently registered in Tesla's 'Early Access' programme are getting the opportunity to use robotaxi for rent in certain areas of South Austin. Tesla Model Y cars are being used in this self-driving taxi service. Although the cars are moving automatically, for safety reasons, a Tesla employee sits in the passenger seat in each car and monitors the entire route. The price for each trip is $4.20.
Although the robotaxi has started its journey, Tesla's much-discussed 'Cybercab' has not yet hit the road. In October last year, Musk presented a prototype of the Cybercab vehicle as a driverless taxi of the future at an event titled 'We, Robots'. Currently, a small number of Tesla-made Model Y cars are being used as robotaxis. Tesla did not provide any information about whether the number of cars will be increased after the range of destinations is expanded or what the maximum fare will be.
Incidentally, various companies have already launched self-driving taxi services in the United States. Waymo, which is owned by Google's parent company Alphabet, and Amazon's Zoox are now running robotaxis in Austin, San Francisco, and Phoenix.
